Enya Fontanills

Born in Cuba and trained across Miami, San Francisco, and Rome, Enya Fontanills builds a pictorial universe where migratory memory, water, and the oneiric coexist on the same surface. Her work blends painting, object, and installation with an intimate, surrealist sensibility.

Her journey crosses the Atlantic like crossing a mirror: each city leaves a layer of color, a texture, a question about what is left behind and what is brought to the table. She now lives and works between Spain and Miami, with an archive in constant motion.

Artist statement

The work always begins the same way: a scene comes to me like a vision. Not as an abstract idea, but as a complete image — with light, temperature, silence. Memory and desire overlap until a figure, an object, a crack in the everyday appears.

I paint from that instant. Water returns again and again because it is border and bridge: it separates Cuba from Miami, joins the intimate with the collective, holds bodies crossing without a map. I use color as emotional temperature and the object as domestic relic — a glass, a table, a fragment of glass — to speak of what survives exile.

I do not seek to illustrate history; I seek to make it visible at a threshold. Each piece is a crossing paused in a single frame: what is brought to the table, what breaks, what can still be filled.
